The detail I had missed

I woke up, checked the result and saw the news I had been hoping for: England had beaten Norway.

I opened Polymarket expecting to see a profit — and instead found a loss. Then I read the resolution rules properly.

The market was not asking who would progress to the next round. It was asking for the result at the end of 90 minutes, excluding extra time.

"England to win" can mean different things

England and Norway had been level when normal time ended. England then scored during extra time and went on to win the match. So both statements were true:

I had checked the headline result, not the sequence of events. The result pages said England had won. That matched what I believed I had traded. When my portfolio showed a loss, my first instinct was that the platform had made an error.

What I learned

But prediction markets do not settle according to the broadest interpretation of a headline. They settle according to the exact wording and source specified in the rules. The platform had not made a mistake. I had misunderstood the market.

Before I place any trade, I now ask myself five simple questions:

If I can't answer all five confidently, I don't place the trade. This matters beyond football. Prediction markets often contain precise definitions around dates, time zones, official announcements and data sources.
